Mathura is believed to be the birthplace of Krishna, which is located at the Krishna Janamsthan Temple complex. It is one of the Saptapuri the seven cities considered holy by Hindus. Mathura is a holy city for Hinduism and is considered the heart of Brij Bhoomi, the land of Krishna. The twin-city to Mathura is Vrindavan.
There are many places of historic and religious importance in Mathura and its neighboring towns, Krishna Janamsthan Temple complex is an important group of temples built around what is considered to be the birthplace of Krishna. The temple complex contains Keshav Deva temple, GarbhaGriha shrine, BhagavataBhavan, and the Rangabhoomi where the final battle between Krishna and Kamsa took place.
The Dwarkadheesh temple is the largest and the oldest temple in Mathura Vishram Ghat at the bank of river Yamuna is said to be the place were Krishna had rested after killing Kamsa.
Other notable Hindu religious sites and heritage locations include the Gita Mandir, GovindDev temple, Iskcon temple, KusumSarovar, Namyog Sadhna Mandir, PeepleshwarMahadeo Temple, and Yum Yamuna Temple.
Holi, a festival of colors that marks the victory of good over evil is one of the main festivals of Hindus. It is celebrated with great vigor and enthusiasm throughout India. Lathmar Holi is celebrated 4-5 days prior to the festivities of other states. However, it is interesting to note how this festival is celebrated in a rather peculiar way in Nandgaon and Barsana towns in Mathura-district of Uttar Pradesh. The towns are located some 42 km from Mathura and are extremely popular for the celebrations during Holi. The natives are known for their interesting way of playing Holi with not only colors but also sticks. Thandai (a sweet drink).
Janmashtami is grandly celebrated every year in Mathura. Every year 3 to 3.5 million devotees celebrate Janmashtami in Mathura, with the most number of people in Keshav Deva temple and Dwarkadheesh temple. People generally observe a fast and break it at midnight when Lord Krishna was believed to have been born. Devotional songs, dance performances, blogs, and aartis are observed across Mathura-Vrindavan.
